Summary: 3.4 miles - mostly flat - 45 minutes to 1 hour - Google Map for this horseback ride

Altitude Profile (200ft up/down)
This is one of the most basic horseback rides out of the Ranch, however there is traffic to deal with and many objects your horse might find very dangerous...
Out through the main gate it goes through Los Altos Hills, Esther Clark park and back behind Pinewood School. It has a few nice spots to let your horse run, check out the details on the map below.

The Coyote Hill ride is about 1.7 miles and takes about 40 minutes at a walk.

The route described here goes through the gate, up on the little hill on the left next to Pagemill Road. At the end of the hill (there is a shrub) turn right and go down and cross the creek (Purissima Creek) next to Coyote Hill road. After that follow the trail to the top of Coyote Hill. There are several ways down, we picked the small trail on the ridge heading North, then circled around and took one of the many little trails on the west face of Coyote Hill back down. Instead of crossing Purissima Creek again we headed South and exited the Gelding Pasture through the wooden gate onto Deer Creek Road.

At the wooden gate - we had a good ride!
One of the most basic rides on the ranch: The Mare Pasture Ride. Up through the catchpen to the top of the hill, ok there are three peaks and back down through the valley.

Altitude Profile Saddle Mountain Valley Ride (400ft up/down)
This is a very nice short trail ride that I did not know existed until recently when John showed it to us. It has quite some uphill section that invite to let your horse canter. The only unpleasant parts are the two underpasses on 280 and the stretch along Arastradero until you hit Stirrup Way - there is lots of noises and scarry things for the horses, as well as lots of traffic, from cars to many bicycles.

Saddle Mountain Valley
Out through the back gate on the mare pasture this ride goes along Arastradero to the Stirrup Way, continues on after the dead end onto a trail in the field where we reach Saddle Mountain Valley (not really sure if that is the real name ...). Anyway, here we run up the valley almost to the top before turning right underneath the white house reaching Saddle Ct. Continue on to the end of Saddle Mountain Rd and take the trail to Elena. From there it is back down underneath 280 to Purissima and down to Arastradero and the ranch. As an alternative, instead of getting in at the back gate, take the loop around to the front gate. Some more picture and trail description can be found in the Gallery.

Cantering up Saddle Mountain Valley
